Hello fans of me.
Thank you for sticking with me in this endeavor. I am starting small, but seeing positive growth, so I appreciate all of the support. We have now finished with May which came with some much needed rain. There always seems to be a stigma towards rainy days which should end. Fun fact: I like the rain. I think it’s the moisture, it’s so refreshing to breath in. Unlike wildfires which have the habit clogging my lungs when I breath those in. But I’m not here to debate rainy vs. non-rainy days, I’m here to tell you what’s coming up in the world of Jeremy, and what I have been up to.
Cozy Is Fine
I’ve actually received a few heartfelt replies about our cat Cozy which if you ready my article The CAT, you’ll know she went through some traumatic dental surgery this past month. But Cozy has proven to be pretty resilient, and she is back to her old self. Although we now call her “Muppet Mouth” or “Gummy” now due to her lack of teeth. But the national health crisis is over, and the vet has assured us that her quality of life has now improved. We will continue to give her loving attention when she needs it so she will be with us for years to come.
Book Store Sales
In our house, May is book sale month. My wife Katie and I always take the time to visit some annual sales in and around the Red Deer area. We started off in late April with the Red Deer Public Library book sale, where they always have some interesting finds. Next we went to Calgary for the Reset book sale by the Crossroads Market. This was a new sale for us, but it was bustling and booming all over. We even got to stop at the market afterwards to take in the local atmosphere. However the big sale was the very next week in Calgary at the “CALGARY READS BIG BOOK SALE.” This was the one we starting going to before the pandemic, and there is always so much to see. You could lose yourself for days if properly motivated. It’s a wonderful program with all of the proceeds going towards promoting Calgary literacy. Some hot pick ups for me were James Joyce’s collection of short stories “The Dubliners” as well as Ursula K. Le Guin’s legendary “Earthsea” trilogy. Katie had the biggest haul though, as she found almost the entire collection of Hardy Boys books with their original cover art, a few mysteries, and a book about the sci-fi series “The Outer Limits.”
Trip to Banff
We ended the month with a trip to Banff. My wife being from America had not seen the Rocky Mountains up close yet, so we took a day with my dad and step-mom to go out exploring. We saw some great sights, took the gondola (I hate heights), and ate some fancy chocolate. Of course Banff can be a tourist trap with many people hovering all through town. However ,we were able to find a nice quiet restaurant for lunch and steal a few moments to take in the majestic mountains.
Coming Up in June
We seem to be settling into summer, so I’m hoping to get a lot more writing done. I have a few projects on the go which I will hopefully be sharing in the coming weeks. I don’t want to jinx anything. I will also be attending the Writer’s Guild of Alberta Conference in Edmonton happening this weekend June 7-9. The title for this conference is called No Place Like Home and has some great programs, and speakers lined up, I can’t wait. Hopefully a full report will be due afterwards. Afterwards, I have some family events lined up, including a little mini-reunon with some cousins I have not seen in a long time.
I WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU
Now that you have been given a taste of what I hope to bring to this substack, I was to hear from those of you who have read it. What would you like me to write about? What do you want to see more of? I would love to read your comments so feel free to leave me a message. Thank you again and I’ll see you soon.
Cheers
Jeremy
Would love to see the odd essay - I’ve been particularly drawn to the works of essays as I’ve been yanking out many Criterion booklets to dedicate a cup of tea or two…to.
The most recent was Lena Dunham’s included with ‘The Big Chill’. Is wasn’t about the film, except that it was of course. Maybe give it a read?
Just nice to stay updated - I miss seeing everyone, EVEN YOU, so this is a nice way to feel connected.
Much love,
M
